OkCupid - So far, so good!

The dating site OkCupid was reccommended to me by an American friend of mine.  I'd never heard of it so maybe it's more popular there.  This is another free site, so I immediately expected to see the sort of juiced up, shirtless in the bathroom mirror photos that Plenty of Fish is so famous for -- but there weren't any!  Just normal-looking, fully clothed men!

I've been on this site about a month and from what I can tell it attracts a totally classier crowd than POF.  Not to mention, the interface is a thousand times nicer to use... sorry, I'm an IT nerd and had to throw that in.  It might also be fair to say that OkCupid attracts a somewhat off-beat crowd.  By that I mean, well, I've run across lots of musicians, artists and graphic designers, computer guys, guys in the film and TV industry, and aspiring writers.  There are also men in more traditional finance or trades jobs, but I think you'll notice a big Arts demographic -- moreso than on POF.

One of the more interesting things on OkCupid is their matching system.  They somehow determine how well matched you are with another person based on the questions you answer on the site.  I'm not sure how much I buy into this though.  For some reason I keep coming up with over 90% compatibility to really introverted bohemian types.  Could this be because I put in my profile that I'm into music?  And also they match me really highly with Asian computer nerds.  Is this because I checked the "I.T." box under Occupation?  I already know from past relationship experience that I have no patience for starving artists and poets.  Some of the things they say make me roll my eyes, like, a LOT.  And as for the Asian population, I'm sorry, but I guess they're just not my type.  (I prefer tall, burly, manly men, and when was the last time you saw a tall, burly Asian?)  I think you really need to take their matching system with a grain of salt.

My overall experiences with this site have been really great so far.  I've even gone so far as to meet someone in person.  Derek arrived looking just like his pictures and was exactly what I expected from his profile.  Yay!  After a second date we quickly realized that we'd be better as friends, so there's no romance potential, but in the end I now have a Facebook friend who writes hilarious status updates.  Who doesn't want another one of those?

I'm now chatting with someone on msn from OkCupid named Arnold.  (I wish I could stop thinking of Ah-nold whenever I see or type his name, but that's totally my issue, not his.)  The next step is a coffee date probably.  Stay tuned for more Arnold (not the Governator) developments!
